What Makes an Impeller Decorative
Most impellers are bought for one reason: to move air. A decorative impeller is bought for what it looks like. In an architectural fan or an art installation fan, the impeller is the visible object — the part a visitor stands under, looks up at, or walks past. Aerodynamic efficiency drops down the priority list; form, scale and slow visible rotation move up.
That shift changes the engineering. A wheel that turns at tens of rpm instead of hundreds produces almost no useful airflow, so the design is not sized against a duty point. It is sized against the space, the sightline and the structure it hangs from.
Reference Build: Ø1600 mm Six-Blade Impeller
SINDFAN produced a decorative impeller of Ø1600 mm with six blades. The brief was aesthetic first: the wheel had to read as a fan at a distance while turning slowly enough that individual blades remain visible to the eye.
Construction was structural GRP laid up by hand over a welded steel frame. The steel skeleton carries the loads and holds the shape; the GRP provides the finished surface and the blade form. The assembly was statically balanced before delivery and turns at tens of rpm.
Why GRP Over Steel for a Large Diameter Impeller
A large diameter GRP impeller is normally built as a composite skin over a structural core, and the reasons are practical:
- Hand layup allows blade curvature and surface finish that are difficult to achieve in formed metal.
- The welded steel frame supplies stiffness so the blades hold position under their own weight at large diameter.
- Weight stays manageable for ceiling or wall mounting at Ø1600 mm and above.
- Composite surfaces accept paint and finish systems specified by the architect.
Safety Engineering Below the Aesthetic Layer
A slow-turning wheel is not automatically a safe one. Large diameter means high tip speed even at low rpm, and a blade that leaves its hub is a serious event. For the Ø1600 mm unit, blade retention was analysed as a design case, not left to fabrication tolerance.
Balancing followed the same logic: static balance to G6.3 was applied so the wheel turns without visible wobble or vibration being transferred to the mounting structure. Low tip speed was a deliberate target rather than a by-product of slow rotation.
Sizing the Wheel to the Space
Diameter is normally set by the room or façade rather than by airflow. A wheel of Ø1600 mm suits a tall atrium or an open industrial interior; a smaller unit works above a reception desk or inside a retail ceiling void. Blade count and profile then decide how the wheel reads: six broad blades at low speed give a slow, legible rotation, while more, narrower blades blur into a disc at the same rpm.
What Can Be Customised
The impeller is treated as a made-to-order component. Hub design, bore, and blade shape are open to specification.
- Hub and bore configured to suit the drive, shaft or bearing arrangement on site.
- Blade count, profile, and pitch set by the visual brief.
- Custom impeller sizes generally from Ø150 mm to Ø3150 mm.
- OEM and ODM work, including builds to a designer's or contractor's drawings.
- Balancing to ISO 1940 where the installation or bearing arrangement requires it.
Lead Time and Specifying
Build time for a decorative unit such as the Ø1600 mm six-blade impeller is 5–7 days per unit. Specifying is quicker when the enquiry includes diameter, blade count and blade shape intent, mounting and drive arrangement, hub and bore detail, finish requirement, and the site conditions the wheel will see — indoor, outdoor or suspended in a public space.
