Ordering Custom Impellers? Here Is the Drawing Checklist OEMs Need

When OEMs source a custom impeller, the quality of the engineering drawing determines how accurately the manufacturer can quote materials, tooling and delivery — and whether the finished part will balance correctly on your rotor assembly. A clear fan impeller drawing is the single most effective way to shorten approval cycles and avoid machining revisions. Start with Full Geometric Definition

An impeller drawing must first define the functional envelope of the part. At a minimum, OEMs should specify overall diameter, blade count, blade width and the direction of rotation when viewed from the inlet. If the blade profile is non-linear, include a section view or a 3D model rather than relying only on front and side elevations. For centrifugal types, the drawing should show the eye diameter, shroud contour and discharge width. For axial types, show twist angle and stagger across the blade if it varies.

Leading dimensions must carry tolerance calls. On a custom impeller OEM order, critical features — bore, face runout and the register diameter that pilots against the motor or shaft — need tight control because they affect concentricity at running speed.

Include Hub and Mounting Data in the Same File

The hub is where most drawing mismatches occur. The fan impeller drawing should state the shaft bore diameter and its tolerance, keyway width and depth with the applicable standard, locating screw threads, and the pattern of bolt holes if the impeller is bolted to a backplate or motor flange. Also record whether the shaft fit is to be a light press, transition or clearance fit — this changes how the supplier organises the machining sequence.

If the impeller is a replacement or a copy of an existing metal or resin part, attach the old part number, a photograph and the actual measured interface dimensions. Reproducing from a physical sample is far easier when the hub data are clear.

Select the Material and Manufacturing Route Before Approval

SINDFAN offers aluminium die-cast (LM6 or A356), GRP by hand lay-up or RTM, nylon66 injection moulding and fabricated steel construction. Each route has different drawing requirements:

  • Aluminium die-cast — the drawing must show draft angles, minimum wall thickness and the surface quality acceptable on non-machined faces.
  • GRP hand-lay/RTM — indicate resin type, fibre layering, gelcoat requirements and permissible void level in high-stress zones.
  • Nylon66 injection — include runner witness limits, gate position if visible, and whether glass reinforcement is required.
  • Fabricated steel — show weld type, weld size and any post-weld stress relief for large fans.

State the maximum operating RPM and any corrosive or thermally aggressive environment; this sets the hub-to-blade joint and material grade without guesswork.

Put Dynamic Balance Criteria in Writing

An OEM should never assume a balance grade. SINDFAN balances impellers to ISO 1940-1 G4.0 as standard capability, while G6.3 is treated as the customary quality level for general industrial production. The drawing — or an auxiliary specification note — should define the balance grade, whether balancing is single-plane or two-plane, and how any correction weights will be applied. Speed-sensitive applications should also state test RPM if it differs from maximum service speed.

Drawing Checklist Summary

  • Overall diameter, blade geometry, width and rotation direction
  • Bore size, keyway, pilot diameter and bolt hole pattern with tolerances
  • Material and manufacturing process (die-cast, GRP, nylon66 or steel)
  • ISO 1940-1 balance grade and test RPM
  • Maximum operating speed, airflow direction and static/dynamic pressure rating if known
  • Environmental limits: temperature, moisture, corrosive media, spark risk
  • Finish, colour and surface roughness of aerodynamic faces
  • Acceptance limits: runout, concentricity and permissible unbalance correction mass

Prototype to Series and Export Experience
