Why Blade Material Sets the Limits of a Fan
Two fans can share the same casing, impeller geometry and motor, yet behave very differently in service because of one variable: the fan blade material. Material choice decides the maximum temperature the rotor can survive, whether the blades resist corrosion, whether static charge is a risk in an explosive atmosphere, and whether the fan can keep running during a fire. When specifying a fan, work through those four conditions first, then match the blade material to the duty.
GRP Fan Blades: General Ventilation to +70 °C
GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) blades are the standard option for general ventilation and mildly warm air streams. SINDFAN GRP blades are rated for continuous operation from −40 °C to +70 °C. The material is non-metallic and resists many dilute acids, salts and humid air streams that would attack an untreated metal rotor. GRP is also light relative to cast metal, which reduces start-up torque and bearing load, and it can be moulded into complex aerofoil sections without machining.
The limits are equally clear: 70 °C is the ceiling, so GRP is unsuitable for drying, process exhaust or heat-affected duty. GRP is not a fire-rated material and is not offered in an anti-static grade, so it should not be selected for smoke extraction or for explosive-atmosphere duty.
Nylon 66 Blades (GRN): −40 °C to +150 °C
SINDFAN GRN blades are moulded nylon 66, rated from −40 °C to +150 °C. That is more than double the thermal headroom of GRP, which makes nylon 66 blades the appropriate choice for higher-temperature industrial ventilation — process exhaust, drying lines, hot air movement and similar duties where the air stream is warm but not fire conditions.
Nylon 66 is also available in a modified grade, GRN-ATI. This is an anti-static version intended for use in explosive (Ex) areas where the fan is paired with a flameproof motor. In those installations, a static-dissipative blade avoids the charge accumulation that an insulating plastic rotor could otherwise develop.
Aluminium Fan Blades: Fire-Rated Duty to 400 °C
Cast aluminium LM6 blades are specified for fire-rated duty up to 400 °C, including smoke extraction systems, where the rotor must continue to move hot smoke during an emergency rather than deform or fail. Aluminium is the only one of the three materials here that covers that temperature band.
For heavier duty, SINDFAN uses die-cast LM6 and A356 blades with T6 heat treatment for improved mechanical properties and dimensional consistency. On marine impellers, castings are X-ray inspected to ASTM E155 to confirm internal soundness before machining. On mining rotors, anti-spark brass wear rings are fitted, so that any blade-tip contact with the casing does not generate a spark in dust-laden or gassy environments.
Comparing the Three Blade Materials
- GRP fan blades: −40 °C to +70 °C; corrosion-resistant, low mass; general ventilation only; no fire rating, no anti-static grade.
- Nylon 66 blades (GRN): −40 °C to +150 °C; higher-temperature industrial ventilation; GRN-ATI anti-static grade available for Ex areas with flameproof motors.
- Aluminium fan blades (LM6): fire-rated duty up to 400 °C, including smoke extraction; die-cast LM6/A356 with T6 heat treatment; X-ray inspection to ASTM E155 on marine impellers; anti-spark brass wear rings on mining rotors.
Selection Notes and Efficiency
Start with the highest temperature the fan will see in service — including a fire case if the fan forms part of a smoke extraction strategy. Then screen for atmosphere: corrosive, dusty, marine or potentially explosive. Then confirm the mechanical demand, including any requirement for spark-free operation. Where more than one material satisfies the duty, the lighter option usually reduces start-up torque and bearing load.
Achievable fan efficiency of up to 80%+ depends on aerofoil profile, tip clearance, casing design and the accuracy with which the blade is manufactured — not on material alone. The material simply determines whether the fan is still able to operate, and still able to hold its shape, under the conditions you are asking it to handle.
