Engine rooms, paint lockers and cargo pump rooms all depend on fans that can move the required air volume reliably against system resistance, survive the marine environment, and, in hazardous zones, operate without becoming an ignition source. For these reasons, shipowners and shipyards specify fans that are not only mechanically robust but also certifiable by the classification society under which the vessel will be classed.

What Class Society Certification Means for Ship Fans

Classification societies such as CCS (China Classification Society), ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) and DNV verify that marine equipment is designed, manufactured and tested in accordance with recognized engineering rules. For rotating machinery such as ventilation fans, certification normally covers review of drawings, material traceability, manufacturing procedures and testing witnessed by a surveyor.

Note that a fan is class-approved for a specific project, not rest-of-the-world "certified" in a generic sense. Manufacturing and Test Standards for the Marine Ventilation Fan

Explosion-Proof Fans for Hazardous Zones

Paint rooms and cargo pump rooms are classified hazardous areas on vessels because flammable vapors may be present. For these spaces, a general-purpose axial fan is not acceptable: an Ex fan is required.

Anti-static GRN-ATI blades are relevant because glass-reinforced plastic impellers can otherwise accumulate static charge in a moving air stream.

The Certification Path: What to Prepare with Your Fan Supplier

If your vessel is to be built to CCS, ABS or DNV rules, the certification process for the marine ventilation fan typically runs parallel to the shipyard drawing approval cycle:

  • Submit your project duty to the fan supplier, specifying air volume, static pressure, frequency, ambient temperature and classification society
  • The supplier prepares a fan selection, dimensional drawing and technical specification
  • Classification survey approval of the drawing and, where required, inspection of material certificates and testing takes place before dispatch
  • The fan is supplied with the applicable works certificate and test report, ready for surveyor approval onboard or at the yard
