Two Sources of Fan Noise

Noise from an industrial fan comes from two distinct places, and separating them is the first step in any effective fan noise reduction programme.

  • Aerodynamic noise — generated by turbulence in the airflow and by the tip clearance between the impeller blade tips and the casing. It rises steeply with air velocity and with the pressure the fan develops, and it is broadband in character.
  • Mechanical noise — generated by rotor imbalance, bearing condition and the motor itself. It tends to appear as discrete tones and can worsen as the machine ages.

Because the two behave differently, they need different countermeasures. Silencers act on the sound travelling along the duct path; balance, bearings and blade material act on the mechanical path; rotational speed affects both.

Axial Fan Silencers and the Bellmouth

A silencer reduces noise by lining the air path with sound-absorbing material, so that acoustic energy is converted to heat before it reaches the surrounding space. Its effectiveness depends on the length of the lined section and on how much of the duct cross-section is occupied by absorbent.

SINDFAN jet and tunnel fans can be supplied with 1D and 2D silencer sections arranged around the bellmouth. The 1D and 2D designations denote the silencer length in multiples of the fan diameter, so a 2D section is twice as long as a 1D section and delivers greater attenuation. The trade-offs are space, weight and a modest addition to system pressure loss.

Two practical points matter. First, a silencer controls noise travelling along the duct, not noise radiated directly from the casing and motor, which must be addressed by the machine itself. Second, the silencer must be sized to the same airflow as the fan; an undersized unit creates its own turbulence and can raise the very noise it is meant to reduce.

Speed: The Strongest Single Lever

Aerodynamic sound power scales roughly with the fifth power of fan speed. In practice that means a 20% reduction in rotational speed cuts radiated sound power to about one third of its original value, and even a 10% speed reduction removes in the region of 40%. Fan shaft power falls with speed as well, so the same change usually reduces energy consumption.

This is why speed control is often the most cost-effective noise measure available. A fan that only needs full output during peak demand can run at reduced speed for most of its operating hours, staying far quieter without any additional hardware. The constraint is the duty point: flow and pressure both fall with speed, so the reduced-speed condition must still meet the system requirement. Correct fan selection, without excessive margin, is what makes this possible.

Blade Design, Material and Balance

Impeller design and rotor quality determine how much mechanical noise a fan produces.

  • GRP blades damp vibration rather than transmitting it. Glass-reinforced plastic absorbs the small oscillations that metal blades pass into the shaft and bearings, reducing both radiated noise and structural excitation.
  • Rotor balance to ISO 1940-1 G4.0 limits residual unbalance to a controlled grade. A well-balanced rotor cuts mechanical noise at source and reduces bearing load, which extends bearing life and lengthens service intervals.
  • Blade profile and tip clearance govern aerodynamic noise. Reducing tip clearance limits the leakage vortex that produces much of the broadband noise, while blade count and profile shape influence the tonal content.

Verifying the Result

Acoustic improvements are only meaningful if the fan still performs. SINDFAN fans are performance tested to ISO 5801 and ISO 13350, so airflow, pressure and thrust data are established independently of the noise discussion.
